Dr. Abu Jamei to El País: Gaza’s War Trauma Will Deeply Affect Future Generations
In an interview with Spanish newspaper El País, Dr. Yasser Abu Jamei, Director General of the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme (GCMHP), described the profound psychological toll of the ongoing war on Gaza. He warned that the trauma, especially among children, is severe and will echo through future generations. Over one million children are in urgent need of mental health support, suffering from symptoms like nightmares, bedwetting, and social withdrawal. Despite dire conditions, GCMHP’s limited staff continues to deliver services in displacement sites across the Strip. Dr. Abu Jamei emphasized that the collapse of infrastructure and suspension of international funding threaten these critical efforts. He concluded by calling the situation a “new Nakba,” urging for a political and humanitarian solution beyond mere aid.
